Leadership for Mecklenburg County

Citizens across this country are increasingly unhappy with the level of discourse in public service. National, state, and local government relations have become strained as we face an increasingly complex set of challenges.

In particular, Mecklenburg County is at a crossroads, and strong, capable, and steady leadership is needed now more than ever. We need serious, committed leaders who are dedicated to working for the good of all county residents. We need leaders who have the skills to understand the issues, and create bi-partisan solutions that benefit more than just a limited number of constituents.

 

Real job creation

The unemployment rate in Mecklenburg County is at 10% -- higher than the state average, and higher than the national average. Job creation should be at the top of our agenda. Yet, we must focus on real job creation, not simply corporate giveaways.

We need to require that the business incentive funds the County grants to corporations be conditioned upon the creation of jobs for people who are already here in Mecklenburg County. We know that when people in our County have good jobs and the dignity of work, this is the foundation of a successful economy.

 

Efficient and effective government

As a community, we need to ensure the effective and efficient use of taxpayer dollars when it comes to the delivery of human services. We need to root out waste, fraud, and abuse so that our citizens get the most out of their tax dollars.

Social services represent the second largest category of expenditures the County makes each year. It is beyond question that we can achieve cost savings and other efficiencies within this budget item.

 

Education for our future

Education is the key to all achievement in our society. There is overwhelming evidence that the surest way out of poverty is a good education. Indeed, an educated citizenry makes our economy vibrant and strong. Still, our educational system has to prepare students for the economy that actually exists today and in the foreseeable future.

I believe that we must invest in education by focusing on providing technical and vocational training in science, technology, engineering, and math. A recent study completed by the McKinsey Global Institute found that job growth over the next decade will come from manufacturers and service providers in the fields of the sciences, technology, engineering and math.
